WHAT IS STAINLESS STEEL 321?

Stainless steel 321 is an austenitic alloy and is a grade of stainless steel. It has good resistance to heat and is stabilized due to the presence of the metal titanium in it. It is generally used for service in the temperature range of 1000°-1600°F. Stainless steel Grade 321 is similar to grade 304 stainless steel, but with titanium addition of 5 times the carbon content. Alloy 321 stainless steel is resistant to chromium carbide formation due to the addition of titanium. This titanium addition reduces or prevents carbide precipitation during welding and gives protection in 800°-1500°F service conditions. Stainless steel 321 is resistant to oxidation up to 1600°F and it also resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking.

Stainless steel 321 has found its applications in a variety of industries. It is used in high temperature chemical process heat exchanger tubes, refineries and at high temperature steam service. It is also used for making fittings such as flanges, slip-ons, blinds, weld-necks, lap joints, long welding necks, socket welds, elbows, tees, stub-ends and also for making weld wired.
