Why use stainless steel ?
Also known as Inox steel or inox, stainless steel is an alloy of steel, with a minimum of 11% chromium content by mass. It is better than steel in that it does not corrode (or stain) in water, like steel does. It is used where properties of steel and corrosion resistance are required simultaneously. It contains enough amount of chromium, which on reacting with atmospheric oxygen, forms a passive layer of chromium oxide. This layer prevents further diffusion of oxygen, thus preventing corrosion. Also, this layer is very thin, so hardly visible. The surface stays really smooth and does not lose its lustre. Further, stainless steels show almost no deflection in the presence of magnetic fields. As the name suggests, they are highly malleable, and ductile. Stainless steel is also highly resistive towards acid attacks. However, hydrochloric acid does corrode the alloy. It has a lower electrical conductivity than copper, thus is a bad conductor of electricity.
Due to this large range of properties, stainless steel finds its application in almost every industry, the most demanding being chemical, process and oil industry. They are used in desalination plants, sewage tanks, ship propellers and harbor supports.
Also, because of the ability to combat corrosion at high temperatures, they are heavily used in power generation plants. Steam and gas turbines use stainless steel because of the high thermal resistance. Stainless steel also finds application in architectural sector, namely for cladding, roofing and facades. Reinforcing bars are also made of stainless steel, owing to the corrosion resistance property again. In architecture, it finds application both because of its favorable properties as well as aesthetic reasons
Catalytic converters and exhaust systems in cars also use the alloy extensively. It is also forming a major part of the structure of the automobiles these days. Passenger rail cars use stainless steel panels which are corrugated for additional strength.
Apart from these large-scale industries, stainless steel is also used for making kitchen appliances and utensils, for obvious reasons. Food storage is also feasible in the containers made of steel as it allows the additional benefit of easy cleaning.
It is also used to make dentistry equipment, like sterilized needles, endodontic files, metal posts, and crowns. Moreover, it is hundred percent recyclable. This allows minimum wastage of this useful alloy. In secondary markets, scrap stainless steel is recycled to form coils, sheets and blanks.
Stainless steel is classified into various categories on the basis of the crystalline structure.
- Austenitic: this type of steel has a face-centered cubic structure. This is the most used steel, as it forms nearly 70% of all the steel products. They are composed of a minimum 0.15% of carbon, a minimum of 0.16% of chromium, and sufficient nickel or manganese. Superausteniticsteels exhibit better resistance to chromium pitting because of high molybdenum content.
- Ferritic: this type of steel has a lower corrosion resistance than austenitic steel. It has slightly lower nickel and chromium content. They contain between 10.5% and 27 % chromium and the minimal amount of nickel. They also contain lead sometimes.
- Martensitic: this type of steel is not very resistive towards corrosion, but has remarkable strength and toughness. It also shows remarkable machinability. It contains chromium (12–14%), molybdenum (0.2–1%), nickel (less than 2%), and carbon (about 0.1–1%).
- Duplex steels are generally produced with the aim of producing a 50-50 microstructure of both austenitic and ferritic steels. They are twice as strong as austenitic grades and are also better at resisting corrosion. They have about 19%-32% chromium and up to 5% molybdenum. The nickel content is lower than that of austenitic steels.
- Precipitaion hardening martensitic: this type of steel has corrosion resistance comparable to that of austenitic grades. They can be hardened to even stronger varieties than martensitic steels.

The problems faced by the customers in the market
In today’s scenario, malpractices like supplier commission and supply of poor quality alloys are very much prevalent. The customers are often trapped in these vicious practices and end up paying much more than required, that too, for alloys of bad quality. There are often no mill reports to support the claims about quality. The products fail to satisfy ASTM standards. The products are too hard to be put to use. There is no control on quality and testing of goods. Scrap material is not treated properly and is supplied in a poor state. Thus, the claims about environment friendliness stand hollow and meaningless. Lack of good surface finish always poses a great problem. The material loses its lustre and appears to be very corroded and dirty. There are other problems like improper packaging, which results in the degradation of alloys due to the adversities of the environment. Thus, the state of the material is very different from what it was at the time of dispatch. Often, wrong grades are supplied, and the alloys cannot be put to any good use. The levels of hardness are generally too high, and thus the machinability is lost. They have minus tolerance and often yield under high pressure. The customers also face the problem of lack of after sale services. There is no replacement warranty accompanying the products. Thus, the customers often end up highly dissatisfied with the services. This often leads to very high rejection rates. There is a huge amount of wastage of both money as well as alloys that follows.
